THE ROGERS/HUANG MEDAL

The Hagler Institute for Advanced Study is proud to announce the John Rogers/Yonggang Huang Medal. This is an annual award for the best collaborative research paper by a Hagler Fellow with a Texas A&M student among the co-authors.

Background

The Rogers/Huang Medal is named after Dr. John Rogers and Dr. Yonggang Huang. Rogers and Huang are both former Fellows of the Hagler Institute who remain involved with the institute. The Rogers/Huang collaboration is among the world’s most successful teams in the history of scientific scholarship, having produced (as of early 2025) seven book chapters and 398 journal articles since 2005, including nine articles in Nature and 15 in Science.

Dr. Rogers is a member of the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine, and Dr. Huang is a member of the National Academies of Science and Engineering. Rogers and Huang have both received awards and recognitions for their collaborative work from numerous organizations including the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Guggenheim Foundation, National Academy of Engineering, National Academy of Sciences, and Society of Engineering Sciences. In addition, Rogers has received recognitions from the American Association for Advances in Functional Materials, American Association for Clinical Chemistry, American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Chemical Society, American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, American Physical Society, Franklin Institute, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Lemelson-MIT Prize, MacArthur Foundation, Materials Research Society, National Academy of Medicine, The Order of Lincoln, Sigma Xi, and Western Society of Engineers, while Huang has been recognized by Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei (Italy), Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (Germany), American Society of Civil Engineers, International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, Royal Society (London), and Royal Society of Canada.

Annual Competition

Eligibility

  1. A current or former Hagler Fellow or Hagler Distinguished Lecturer must be among the co-authors.
  2. A current or former Texas A&M student must be among the co-authors and must have collaborated on the research paper and/or its underlying research while a Texas A&M student.
  3. Eligible research papers must have been completed no more than four years before the submission deadline.
  4. The paper may be published or not.
  5. The paper’s subject matter may be from any field.

Procedure

  1. By June 1 of each year, submit your collaborative research paper to Hagler Institute Assistant Director Blaine Buenger at btbuenger@tamu.edu.
    • The submission may be made by any of the co-authors and must include a copy of the research paper (including date and names of co-authors), along with contact information for at least the Hagler Fellow / Distinguished Lecturer and Texas A&M student (email address will suffice).
    • To be eligible for the upcoming award, research papers must have been completed on or after June 1, 2022 and be submitted to the Hagler Institute by June 1, 2026.
  2. An eligible collaboration team can submit one or more papers in one or more years but cannot submit the same paper more than once.
  3. Non-winning submissions will be carried forward one time for consideration in the following year’s competition, unless withdrawn from further consideration by author request.
  4. Rogers and Huang will manage the review process and provide the Hagler Institute with the names of the winning authors by August 15 of each year.
  5. The Hagler Institute will notify participants of the outcome as soon as possible after the winner is determined and will publicly announce the winning authors in early Fall.

Award

  1. The Hagler Institute will award a total of $10,000, allocated equally among co-authors, and each co-author will receive a Rogers/Huang Medal.
  2. The Rogers/Huang Medal will be formally awarded at the Hagler Institute’s annual gala. Each winning co-author will be invited to the gala to receive this recognition.
  3. Depending on schedules and Hagler Institute resources, the Hagler Institute may arrange a seminar with Rogers and/or Huang and the winning authors.
