Fall 2025 Eminent Scholar Lecture: Dark Energy and the Runaway Universe

Bethancourt Ballroom 2300-C
Nov. 10
7:00 P.M.

Dr. Alexei V. Filippenko
Distinguished Professor of Astronomy
Department of Astronomy,
College of Letters and Science
University of California, Berkeley

Scientists once expected the attractive force of gravity to slow the universe’s expansion, but in 1998, researchers discovered that it’s actually speeding up due to a mysterious, repulsive “dark energy” that makes up about 70% of the cosmos. Even more surprisingly, the current expansion rate is faster than predicted, suggesting the possibility of exciting new physics beyond the standard model.
