Using the Atom as a Laboratory: Willis Lamb Kick-Starts Modern Physics

Willis Eugene Lamb Jr., 1955 Nobel Laureate, was a towering figure in twentieth-century physics and one of the last physicists to excel in both theory and experiment. The Lamb shift experiment was a turning point in modern physics. It stimulated people such as Julian Schwinger and Richard Feynman to develop relativistic QED and modern renormalization theory.
